Adults struggling with eating disorders are often overlooked. Many people still assume eating disorders primarily affect teenagers or young adults, but the reality is that adults of all ages can struggle with disordered eating, body image issues, and compulsive exercise. At The Eating Disorder Center, we are seeing more adults throughout Rockville, Bethesda, Potomac, Chevy Chase, McLean, Arlington, Alexandria, and other areas of Maryland and Virginia reaching out for support than ever before.

For some adults, eating disorder symptoms began years ago and simply became easier to hide over time. Others may develop symptoms later in adulthood due to stress, anxiety, trauma, major life changes, or increasing pressure related to appearance and achievement. No matter when the struggle began, eating disorders can significantly impact emotional wellbeing, relationships, physical health, and quality of life.

One reason more adults are seeking therapy is because awareness around eating disorders has improved. Many adults are beginning to recognize that constantly thinking about food, obsessing over calories, binge eating, restricting food, compulsively exercising, or feeling intense shame around eating are not things they simply have to live with forever. Increasingly, adults are realizing that support is available and that healing is possible.

Another major factor is the pressure many adults experience in high-achieving communities. Areas such as Bethesda, Potomac, Chevy Chase, McLean, Great Falls, Arlington, and Alexandria are often associated with demanding careers, academic achievement, and appearance-focused environments. While these communities offer many opportunities, they can also create intense pressure to “have it all together.” For some individuals, food and body control can become a coping mechanism for stress, perfectionism, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm.

At The Eating Disorder Center’s Rockville office, we frequently work with adults who appear highly successful on the outside while privately struggling with eating disorder thoughts and behaviors. Many clients tell us they feel exhausted by constantly thinking about food, body image, or exercise, yet feel afraid to ask for help because they believe they are “too old” to have an eating disorder or worry their struggles are not serious enough.

The truth is that eating disorders affect people of all ages, body sizes, genders, and backgrounds. Someone does not need to look underweight or visibly ill to deserve support. Many adults with eating disorders maintain careers, relationships, and family responsibilities while silently struggling every day.

We work with adults experiencing a wide range of concerns including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, ARFID, orthorexia, chronic dieting, compulsive exercise, and body image distress. Our therapists also specialize in treating co-occurring concerns such as anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, and trauma through approaches including CBT, DBT, ACT, ERP, and EMDR therapy.

Many adults find that major life transitions can intensify eating disorder symptoms. Pregnancy, postpartum changes, fertility struggles, aging, divorce, grief, career burnout, parenting stress, or changes in health can all impact body image and emotional wellbeing. Some adults who previously felt “recovered enough” may notice symptoms returning during particularly stressful seasons of life.

Social media and modern diet culture have also contributed to increasing struggles among adults. Constant exposure to wellness trends, unrealistic body standards, “clean eating” messaging, and pressure to optimize appearance can worsen anxiety around food and body image. Even messages that appear socially acceptable or health-focused can sometimes reinforce disordered eating patterns.

The good news is that recovery is possible at any age. Therapy can help adults develop a more peaceful relationship with food, improve body image, reduce shame, process underlying emotional struggles, and reconnect with the parts of life that eating disorders often take away.

At The Eating Disorder Center, we provide specialized eating disorder therapy in Maryland and virtual therapy throughout Maryland and Virginia. Our team works with adolescents and adults struggling with eating disorders, anxiety, OCD, trauma, and body image concerns in a compassionate, nonjudgmental environment.

We understand that reaching out for help can feel overwhelming, especially for adults who have been struggling silently for years. Many people minimize their symptoms or tell themselves they should be able to “fix it” on their own. In reality, seeking support is a courageous step toward healing.
